  1. This course focuses on teaching writing “different types of writing”. The first activity focuses on the invention meaning the capacity of the learners to produce their own text from the instruction of the teacher and then be as creative as possible so as to get a good final product.
The second activity is still focusing on writing, how to write love letters from a drawing as a setting. This one is interesting to learners because it is topical at their level and gets everybody involved.
    Activity 1
Story Invention (character profile for the novel)
    Level Advanced

    Aim
    Developing students’ imagination

    Skills Focus

    Writing, reading, listening, speaking

    Time

    1 period

    Materials

    Papers, pens, table

    Preparation
    Sentence starters

    Step

    1
Teacher gives three small pieces of paper to each student

    2
Each student writes on each piece of paper one sentence starter and is supposed to complete it before folding it. Eg. 1.I wish I was… 2. I wish I had… 3. I wish I could…

    3
Teacher asks them to put their written pieces on the table and take three others.

    4
Students read their new papers and guess the character behind the writing (gender, age, nationality, family status, occupation, decorum, character, name)

    5
Each student exposes his/her character and then the group chooses a scrivener to collect all the information about the fictive character

    6
Then finally they read all and invent a story which links their different characters

    7
Feedback: The group reporter reads the product to the class

    Activity 2
    Writing a love letter

    Level: advanced

    Aim
Writing – producing a love letter

    Skills Focus

    Listening and writing

    Time

     mins

    Materials

    Paper, pencils, rubbers

    Preparation
Hand each student a blank piece of paper

    Step

    1
Drawing: ask students to draw a circle with a horizontal line in the middle of it

    2
Students draw 3 coconut trees on top of the circle and erase the bottom half of the circle

    3
Students give a name to the place they’ve drawn and write it under the picture

    4
They close their eyes, sit back and imagine they’re alone with their lover on that island

    5
After 4 seconds sts open their eyes and draw themselves with their lover on the picture

    6
Interpretation: Sts exchange pictures and draw one speech bubble next to each character to be filled with a short conversation

Writing: Students return the pictures and each of them writes a love letter based on the picture including the sentences written by the other student

Volunteer students read their letters aloud and class comments

The audience: they 55 students (34 boys and 21 girls) They are aged between 17 to 21 years, and they have been learning English since the age of 12. they are in a private school.
Behavior: at the end of this term, students should be able to write individually their proper lover letters and try to write a story from their invention without major problems. They should be able to recognize a paragraph ( a topic sentence, supporting idea(s) and example(s)) and link correctly the paragraph to have a full text. The work has taken two months to reach this level.
Condition : the material is the daily material used( pens, pencils, papers)
Degree : I proposed for these activities for the advanced level but it is possible to perform them with a year 4 or year 5 secondary school. It works.
    Thank you
    Yours,
    Assane.

  2. Dear Assane,

You're moving in the right direction in terms of content. Your lesson plan description is good. It should be a post rather than a comment, though. It's a matter of getting the content into the right place now.

To create a new post, you need to
    1. Go to www.blogger.com and log in
    (not to your blog directly)
    2. Click on New Post
    3. Type your post there (or copy and paste from what you have here in the comment into a new post).
    4. Click on Publish Post at the bottom so that everyone can see your post.

When it's a comment, you have to click on Comments to see it. When it's a Post, it's on the top level of your blog and much easier to see.

I hope this helps! Please email me if you have any questions.

    Yours,
    Deborah
